Due to the isolation required to protect against the spread of Coronovirus there have been a number of impacts on the project. DESCRIPTION:Join our professional\, hands-on training and be part of a pioneering voluneer curator team. Help us create a legacy! \nThursday 27 February 2020\, 18:30-21:15\, The Montagu Centre\, London\nWhat? The basics of curating heritage; writing for exhibitions\, working with key messages\, working with oral histories\, working with community and faith heritage \nThe workshop will be practical ‘hands-on’\, using materials from the Lily’s Legacy (LL) project. \nWho? Facilitated by Rabbi Dr Miri Lawrence – Liberal Jew\, a Rabbi at Reading Liberal\, Jewish Educator\, PhD examining Judaism in the post-war suburban home (1945-1979) involving oral history\, archival research and heritage/museum work. \nEveryone welcome. No particular skills need. Just a passion for faith & community heritage\, and the willigness to work alongside the LL team on various outputs (tasks may involve reading transcripts\, archive research\, writing content for exhibition posters\, help creating an online exhibition\, help compile exhibition booklet). \n\n\n\nWhy? We will use our new set of skills to conceptualise and create a groundbreaking multi-media exhibition to be launched at the Liberal Judaism Biennial Conference in May 2020\, and Wiener Library in July. \nCurator Rabbi Dr Miri Lawrence-Cohen \nThe workshop is open only to those volunteers who plan on being part of the LL exhibition team. \nCost & Expenses? Participation is free. Reasonable travel and other expenses are paid. \nTime/Hours? Flexible. Workshop attendees are expected to donate a minimum of three hours/week until the end of May 2020 to help produce the Lilys Legacy exhibition. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a private tour by a senior curator from The Wiener Library in view of conducting research for Lily’s Legacy project.\nWe will have a private tour of the Library’s temporary exhibition\, basement archives and Reading Room. \nAfter there will a short skills workshop that is designed to help us get the most out of The Wiener Library’s extensive collections. We will be able to familiarise ourselves with different parts of the collections. SUMMARY:Workshop: Oral History @RefugeeVoices
DESCRIPTION:Recording Oral Histories\nwith Dr Bea Lewkowicz (Director\, Refugee Voices Testimony Archive)\n\nLearn more about oral history\, various techniques and oral history videography. Explore stories of the Refugee Voices Archive. \n‘Looking at selected interviews\, we will discuss the skills of the interviewer and the rapport between interviewer and interviewee.  This will also be an opportunity for the participants to share some their own experiences as interviewers and think creatively how to overcome challenges or problems which have arisen in the interview setting.‘ \nDr Bea Lewkowicz is a social anthropologist and oral historian and is the director of two oral history projects\, the AJR Refugee Voices Testimony Archive and Sephardi Voices UK. She is a member of the Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies\, School of Advanced Study\, University of London. Her research interests include oral history; trauma and memory; diasporas and displacement; and nationalism and ethnicity. She has worked on many oral history projects and has directed and produced a wide range of testimony-based films. She has also curated several exhibitions\, such as ‘Continental Britons’\, ‘Double Exposure’\, ‘Sephardi Voices’\, and most recently ‘Still in Our Hands: Kinder Life Portraits’. Her publications include: \n\n‘Reflections on the Role of Gender in Women’s Oral History Narratives’. In: Exile and Gender II: Politics\, Education and the Arts. DESCRIPTION:In this first project phase of Lily’s Legacy\, we are looking for enthusiastic and dynamic volunteers to help record and transcribe oral histories from people across Liberal Judaism’s communities. All welcome. \nOral history is about recording people’s memories using the medium of sound and video. This can be used as a tool for understanding the recent past\, and enables people who have been hidden from history to be heard and the communities they represent. \nFacilitator: Dr Verusca Calabria   profile: https://www.ohs.org.uk/person/calabria-verusca/ \nSession Content part II (Oral History Training): In this second training session\, we’ll focus on processing our recordings. We’ll look into transcription techniques\, ten we explore the basics of audio editing process using free and easily-accessible software. We’ll discuss more ethical issues around oral histories and other questions that may have popped up since the first training session last month (including use of recording equipment). We will also keep working on the interview/topic guide which is the core resource for conducting interviews in this project. \nIt is possible to join this session without having done part I) in February 2019\, although some catching-up may be necessary. \nThis training is tailormade for this project and appropriate for all levels. \nThe training is only open to project volunteers. \nInterviewer Task Description Role: To carry out oral history interviews\, using a topic guide (i.e.. a list of prepared questions) which will be created as part of the course. Each interview will last approximately 1.5-3 hours. This may also involve travelling to various parts of the UK to interview participants\, but all expenses will be covered\, and travelling outside of London is completely negotiable. \nPerson Specification: In order to carry out the oral history interviewer role\, you’ll need: an interest in history & heritage; literacy skills; organisational skills; to demonstrate an interest in equality/diversity and religion/faith/belief; to be able (with training) to use recording equipment; to be able to travel in order to interview.  We offer reasonable adjustment. \nTime Commitment: In order to be able to take part in the interviewing part of the project\, you must be available for training.  \nVolunteering period: A minimum of 6 months.
